Cartograms use a certain theme in which determines the size of land area and distance of a region on the map. What that means is, the countries are not measured to look like a real directional map, but one that is scaled and determined by the number of that measured quantity in that country. In a nutshell is utilizes relative scaling to present the data of each country/area. For example, the world population by country can be use to distort each country to proportions that represent the number of individuals that make up the population. This is an example of a cartograms as it measures the amount of personalized computers used in each country (2004). Just as any cartogram, the area and distances are distorted to match this number.
